Robert’s critique of the Hickel and Varoufakis Guardian article calls to mind Asef Bayat’s Revolution without Revolutionaries. The takeaway: without a focus on socialism, challenges to capitalism will always be re-directed by the still powerful forces of capitalism. Bayat examined how the aspirations of millions of people in the Arab Region were crushed in the so-called Arab Spring. The non-revolutionary revolution gave way to more violent forms of Neoliberalism. The West destroyed socialism in eastern Europe and now fights endless war against the resulting neoliberal formation.
Are we capable of learning from these still-unfolding human tragedies?
